Desinfección mediante Bromo.  Se trata de una mejor solución que el cloro, con dos beneficios muy importantes:   tenemos cloraminas y por tanto, no tendremos malos olores. Desinfección mediante ozono, ultravioleta y ozono + ultravioleta. El ozono es un potente bactericida que tiene propiedades como inactivador viral, oxida elementos orgánicos e inorgánicos responsables de la putrefacción y ensuciamiento del agua, elimina olores, colores y sabores en el agua. El tratamiento del agua de piscinas con lámparas de rayos ultravioleta está demostrado que es altamente eficaz a la hora de eliminar algunos microorganismos que el cloro o el bromo no son capaces por sí mismos. En estos sistemas, es necesaria la adicción de una mínima cantidad de cloro en el agua como remanente, siempre en una proporción mínima, debido a que cualquiera de estos sistemas sólo desinfecta a su paso por el reactor, ya sea del ozono o del ultravioleta. Cuando el agua vuelve al vaso de la piscina está de nuevo expuesta a que algún contaminante prolifere o se adhiera a las paredes y de esta manera eludir el ultravioleta o al generador de ozono, como le sucede a muchos tipos de algas que anidan en las juntas del gresite. Por esta razón, es necesario mantener un mínimo de desinfectante disuelto en el agua. Beneficios de los sistemas Estos tres sistemas son los únicos que en la actualidad pueden minimizar los problemas de la utilización de cloro y sus derivados en las piscinas. Utilizarlos en contra del cloro nos aportara los siguientes beneficios: Es posible reducir el uso de cloro y otros productos hasta un 60%. Los niveles de cloro combinado quedan reducidos a concentraciones entre 0,05 y 0,4 ppm. El nivel de cloro libre en la piscina queda reducido a niveles entre 0,5 y 0,7 ppm Reducen la materia orgánica en más del 90%. Mejora la efectividad de la filtración (menos lavados de filtros = ahorro de agua). Aumentan la claridad del agua y proporcionan una mejor calidad de aire en el recinto. Únicos sistemas que garantizan la eliminación de cryptosporidium y giardia. Mínimos niveles de corrosión. Hoy os hablaremos de la Desinfección del agua en instalaciones termales Elegir el mejor sistema de desinfección para aguas termales y minero-medicinales no siempre resulta fácil y satisfactorio. El principal criterio de calidad a la hora de valorar un balneario son las propiedades de sus aguas minero-medicinales, aunque también hay otros aspectos como el servicio médico, el trato de los empleados o la higiene y limpieza de sus instalaciones. Lo más importante para alcanzar esta calidad es el tratamiento del agua, el objetivo es proporcionar un agua sin contaminación microbiológica sin que pierda propiedades minero-medicinales y que sea confortable para el usuario. Este tratamiento de desinfección es además obligatorio, ya que nos encontramos ante el marco legislativo del RD 865/2003 por el que se establecen los criterios de prevención y control de la legionelosis. Para ello, existen en el mercado gran variedad de sistemas y productos, métodos físicos, químicos y combinados, de probada eficacia y que son usados en balnearios, spas urbanos, piscinas climatizadas y centros de talasoterapia en toda España. A continuación, comentaremos algunos de ellos. Cloro El cloro, desinfectante tradicionalmente conocido, resulta bastante eficaz y económico para el tratamiento y potabilización de aguas, ya sea aportado en forma de gas disolviéndolo en el agua o bien como hipoclorito sódico (cloro líquido), hipoclorito cálcico (cloro sólido) o como derivados del cloroisocianurato. Los valores recomendados están entre 0,4 y 2 ppm de cloro libre residual. Sin embargo, el cloro reacciona con la materia orgánica del agua formando una serie de compuestos que pueden resultar muy molestos y malolientes, como las cloraminas, que producen el característico “olor a cloro”. Bromo El compuesto más usado es el Bromoclorodimetilhidantoina, que contiene un porcentaje de cloro (28%) en su composición. El bromo en contacto con el agua forma ácido hipobromoso, este producto actúa como desinfectante, oxida la materia orgánica y destruye microorganismos y algas. Los valores recomendados están entre 1 y 3 ppm de bromo libre residual. Las concentraciones de bromo alrededor de 0,5 mg/l en piscinas pueden provocar olores desagradables y causan la irritación de ojos y de las membranas mucosas en los usuarios. Además, debido a su presentación en forma sólida, la disolución en el agua no es homogénea, por lo que tiene picos de concentraciones altas y bajas de producto y es muy difícil mantener un residual de bromo libre constante. Electrólisis de sal Este sistema de tratamiento consiste en mantener una cierta concentración de sal en la piscina que, al pasar a través de una célula de electrólisis se transformará en hipoclorito sódico, el cual actuará como desinfectante. Además de los inconvenientes que presenta el uso de cloro, al tratar aguas minero-medicinales hemos de tener en cuenta que la adición de cloruro sódico (sal) al agua, además de aportarle un ligero sabor salado, modificará sus propiedades. Ultravioleta Este método consiste en el uso de una radiación ultravioleta la cual a una longitud de onda adecuada penetra en las células de los microorganismos y provoca daños en el ADN y ARN, impidiendo su reproducción. Los gérmenes patógenos son inactivados a longitudes de onda de 245 a 285 nm. Con este tratamiento se generan muy bajas concentraciones de subproductos. No es nocivo, pero no deja un residual de protección, por lo que el tratamiento resulta incompleto y es necesaria una desinfección secundaria mediante la adición de un biocida químico. Otra capacidad de los sistemas UV es la eliminación de las cloraminas formadas en los tratamientos con cloro. Peróxidos Es el método más novedoso. Se trata de la misma agua oxigenada que todos conocemos, aunque en una concentración superior a la de uso doméstico. La gran ventaja de este procedimiento es que no deja residuales nocivos al descomponerse en agua y oxígeno. Por tanto, se evitan irritaciones y malos olores. Los valores recomendados están entre 5 y 15 ppm de peróxido libre residual. La dosificación se realiza empleando dosificadores de líquidos y la medición de residual es muy sencilla, mediante tiras reactivas colorimétricas. Este producto se puede emplear también como tratamiento paralelo a otros sistemas físicos desinfectantes como el ultravioleta. Los más usados en España. A principios del año 2007 se realizó un estudio en 34 instalaciones termales españolas a las que se preguntó acerca del método de desinfección utilizado y las ventajas y desventajas observadas. Un 46% de las instalaciones estaba utilizando cloro líquido (hipoclorito sódico) en los tratamientos de desinfección de las piscinas. En todas las instalaciones en las que se usaba hipoclorito, los usuarios indicaban que se notaba un cierto “olor a cloro”. Esto es debido a la formación de productos secundarios (cloraminas) al reaccionar el cloro con la materia orgánica (piel, sudor, aceites, microorganismos, etc.). Cuanto más alta es la temperatura del agua (34-36ºC) mayor es la cantidad de cloraminas que se forman y además se perciben en el ambiente debido a la evaporación. Es importante tener en cuenta que a más cloraminas en la piscina, mayor es la probabilidad de que se produzcan irritaciones de ojos y piel en los bañistas. Para evitarlo, se estaban manteniendo residuales bajos de cloro (0,4-0,6 ppm). Esto supone el peligro de que, al aumentar el número de bañistas, disminuya e incluso desaparezca el residual protector de cloro y favorezca la aparición de un foco de infección o de contaminación. Un 18% de las instalaciones encuestadas no realizaban ningún tipo de tratamiento químico ni físico para no alterar las propiedades mineromedicinales del agua. Para evitar la contaminación por la entrada de bañistas, realizan renovaciones diarias de todo el volumen de agua termal. Además de no cumplir con la legislación, es difícil llevar un control preventivo de legionella. En el 12% de las instalaciones estaban usando bromo sólido que es eficaz para desinfectar incluso a pH altos (8). Los subproductos en base a bromo que se forman al reaccionar con la materia orgánica (bromaminas) no producen olor en la piscina. No obstante, estas pastillas contienen un 30% de cloro en su composición. Otro problema es la dificultad para mantener una concentración constante. En otro 12% de las instalaciones estudiadas se estaban aplicando tratamientos de electrólisis de sal en las piscinas (el cloro desinfectante se forma a partir de sal común). Tienen la ventaja de que no se necesita cloro líquido para su utilización por lo que la manipulación es más segura, pero la principal desventaja radica en que este tipo de tratamiento aporta un ligero sabor salado al agua (4 g/l de sal). Dos de las instalaciones estudiadas (un 6%) utilizaban cloro en pastillas. La principal ventaja de este producto es que es muy estable y posee efecto alguicida además de bactericida. La gran desventaja de su utilización es que al dosificarse en forma de pastillas de disolución lenta (al igual que en el caso del bromo) aparecen muchos picos de producto y la concentración es difícil de mantener. Además se forma la misma, o incluso mayor, cantidad de cloraminas que al utilizar cloro líquido. Otras dos instalaciones encuestadas (un 6%) estaban aplicando peróxido de hidrógeno en combinación con ácido peracético en piscinas terapéuticas. La principal ventaja para los usuarios es que ha desaparecido el “olor a cloro”, además no irrita ojos ni mucosas. Varios balnearios estaban aplicando tratamientos ultravioleta a la salida de los depósitos mineromedicinales para desinfectar el agua. Dan buenos resultados en aguas con baja mineralización, pero en aguas de mineralización alta se observa un “efecto pantalla” ya que las sales provocan una disminución de la actividad del ultravioleta. Por último se observó que ninguna de las instalaciones Encuestadas utilizaba cloro líquido en combinación con tratamiento ultravioleta para desinfectar la piscina. Dos de los balnearios encuestados (con aguas sulfuradas) habían realizado pruebas con ultravioleta y cloro en sus piscinas, pero desestimaron la aplicación combinada ya que se eliminaba un porcentaje muy pequeño de cloraminas al tratarse de agua con temperaturas altas (34-36º C). Además, los tratamientos ultravioleta no son totalmente eficaces ya que actúan solamente sobre el caudal de recirculación (la eliminación de cloraminas se produce de forma puntual). Elegir el tratamiento de desinfección Antes de decidir el tipo de tratamiento en una instalación termal es muy importante poder realizar un estudio previo en una planta piloto del sistema de desinfección, para observar el comportamiento y la eficacia microbiológica con el agua termal de esa instalación. En una planta piloto se representa una instalación real a escala reducida la cual constaría básicamente de una balsa, capaz de mantener el agua a la temperatura deseada, con un sistema de agitación constante, recirculación a través de chorros y/o inyección de aire. Además de un filtro y un sistema de dosificación en continuo para los productos que se quiera probar. En este circuito se dispondría de varios puntos de acceso para la toma de muestras o inclusión de otros sistemas químicos o físicos de tratamiento del agua. Con ello, se genera información sobre los procesos a estudio. Una vez diseñado el sistema acorde a la instalación real, sólo queda ponerlo en funcionamiento con el agua objeto de estudio y el sistema de desinfección elegido. Para cada estudio se elaborará un plan de control y muestreo, siempre supervisado por técnicos especialistas, cuyos resultados nos informarán sobre la idoneidad del tratamiento observado y su posible interacción con el agua mineromedicinal. Este tipo de estudios permiten elegir un tratamiento de desinfección óptimo. En las instalaciones termales y centros de balneoterapia se está tratando aguas mineromedicinales, que pueden verse modificadas por determinados desinfectantes químicos y perder sus propiedades beneficiosas. En ocasiones también es posible que un determinado sistema de desinfección pierda su eficacia en función de algunas características del agua. Se deberá tener en cuenta de cara a los clientes la confortabilidad que ofrece el agua tratada con los sistemas de desinfección, la formación de olores, irritación de ojos y mucosas o generación de subproductos nocivos.
